In the “Vibrations” exhibition, the Chinese artist Gu Xiaoping presents works on paper entitled “Walking Ink Line”.

Since 2013, Gu Xiaoping has been using a traditional Chinese ink box to create his paintings. This ink box was once needed by carpenters as an essential tool to draw lines on wood to make furniture. In a calm, concentrated process characterised by repetition, Gu Xiaoping draws thread after thread from his cartouche and stretches it precisely across the painting surface. The way in which the artist then stretches the thread and releases it determines how and where the ink meets the canvas or paper and what statement is made. The careful alternation of denser and looser structures as well as the contrasting of light and dark areas of colour result in images of great intensity. The artistic process is characterized by a subtle play between control and improvisation, which allows the artist to fully exploit his creative vision.
