Matthias Mansen (born 1958 in Ravensburg) studied in Karlsruhe with Georg Baselitz and Markus Lüpertz, amongst others. He says about his works: “I don´t cut lines, I cut light”.

The second solo exhibition of woodcuts by Mansen at the Laing Gallery is dedicated to key work cycles from recent years. In addition to woodcuts from the 2007 series “Berlin – Tiergarten”, important works from the seven-part series “Potsdamer Straße” from 2012 are presented. The woodcuts show fragmented views of the Street in Berlin, where the artist used to live and where he has his studio nowadays. The Kupferstichkabinett Berlin has acquired one complete set of the edition of 15, while the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe dedicated Mansen (from January 26 to March 31, 2019, parallel to the show in the Laing Gallery) the exhibition “Alles ist Ausschnitt. Potsdamer Strasse ”. The latest cycle, “Trieste and the Gods”, was created in 2017 and is a reminiscence of sculptures from antiquity.
