“Nachtwey shows the current ‘state of affairs’ in the present time (described by the painter himself as ‘punctual work’). A core theme in Nachtwey’s painted series is thus the representation of changes in light and place. Paradoxically, in the attempt to delay real time, at the same time – in relation to the slow medium of painting – a kind of acceleration is created: The oil of the paint itself, in turn, seems to be in motion. Earlier figurative and naturalistic positions on the threshold of painterly modernism are taken up again and continued in a transformed form.”
